A player who cannot crack his own lineup costs nothing to give away; one who walks into the other side’s lineup is worth the margin over the man he displaces.

What this does not do
Bench depth is close to worthless at the margin, so a deep bench is only a trade asset if those players would start somewhere else — that is exactly what this measures. It does not price bye-week or injury cover, which a starting-lineup model scores at zero, and it does not know that a backup behind your own starter is insurance rather than surplus.
